Digital TV will be in major towns in Kenya by December.

ALL the major towns in Kenya will have Digital Terrestrial Television signals by the end of 2012 as the country migrates from analogue TV, Information minister Samuel Poghisio said in Mombasa on Tuesday night. He said the government is committed to move to digital TV for the majority of the viewing population by December. “As a country we are determined that by the end of this year, we should have at least our four million viewers in the main cities already migrating to digital TV, with this we’ll be ahead of the 2015 deadline,” said Poghisio at the launch of Multichoice’s Gotv in Mombasa.
“Government has decided that residents in the main cities to be in digital by the end of this year, and then later other places will have a good chance to move,” the minister said. Two signal distributors, Kenya Broadcasting Corporation’s Signet and Pan-Africa Group have been contracted to set up the networks. Poghisio said Kisumu, Eldoret and Nakuru are next on line after Nairobi and Mombasa
GOtv General Manager, Felix Kyengo said the service provider will also be rolling out in the major towns this year as the signal distribution expands. Multichoice is one of the four dealers of second generation of Digital Video Broadcast Terrestrial technology (DVB-T2) that the Communications Commission of Kenya has approved to sell signal converter set-top boxes. The others are Star Times Media, professional Digital System and Micro-ville Solutions.
CCK has said that the analogue transmission will be completely switched off in Nairobi by September when all viewers are expected to have set-top boxes, the devices that convert analogue signals to digital. All viewers with analogue TV sets are expected to have acquired set-top boxes by then, with the devices’ price expected to go down by at least 25 per cent following a recent tax waiver by government.
